The final day of our trip to NYC was Tuesday and despite not getting back to the hotel until after 11:30 Monday night we were up at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday morning and outside Rockafeller Center at 7:00. We were briefly on TV as they panned the ‘crowd’ (which was not real large due to temperatures in the upper 20′s.) The shot above was a quick posed shot as Meredith Vieira shook hands with the fans.

Monday morning we took the Metro to Times Square and the students involved in the DemandTec competition entered the NASDAQ building and got to work. Dena and I took the subway a few more times to visit B&H Photos and Grand Central Terminal. Monday evening was great as we dressed up and attended the opening performance of “Stiffelio” at the Metropolitan Opera.

Took this shot out the window at the airport as we waited to board the first leg of our flight to NYC. Although short the trip kept us busy with a Broadway show, trip to the Met, and much more.

The birds are enjoying the feeder during these cold days we’ve had. This house finch has been a frequent visitor and is spitting out the sunflower shells.

As it neared bed time I realized I had not shot a single photo today. I had planned to go to a basketball game and a play but decided a night at home was in order after a long week. As I went into the game room I noticed the blooms on the Christmas Cactus. I’m not sure it if has just bloomed or if I have just not noticed it but it caught my attention. The shot above is an angle I took from below the plant and in macro mode.

Most of my shooting is at school. Most weeks I will shoot several different activities which range from dramas to athletic events. This afternoon I shot mainly for news stories including a shot of students competing in a contest in NYC this coming Monday and a gallery of the press conference in which our new football coach was introduced. I used the photo above on the school website this afternoon.

This evening we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany at church and following the service observed the Burning of the Greens in the circle in front of the church. The wreathes and trees from the church as well as trees and wreathes from church members were piled in front of the church and lit on fire. Within minutes the flames rose high into the air.

Many days I know what I will be shooting. For example, tomorrow I will take shots of the “Burning of the Greens” service at church. Thursday I will likely be at the drama production of “Our Town” and Friday there is a basketball game. Sunday through Tuesday we will be in NYC so there should be lots of possibilities. Today, however, I had to look for something to shoot just to have something to post. This shot of me behind the camera is pretty common but not something I shoot often.

It was a frigid morning when I left to return to classes today. The arctic blast has temperatures as low as we have seen this winter and doesn’t promise to let up for several days. We did decide it was a good day for a fire.

This female goldfinch is a regular at the feeder. I recognize her because she has a cut on the back of her head. This shot was taken with a flash just as she moved in to get a snack.
